SJB Girl Scouts Book Drive in 2012

Girl Scout Troop 4189 wants your extra kids’ books! As a service project, the troop will be collecting, sorting, and selling books in 2012.  All proceeds will be donated to St. John the Baptist to provide funds for new tests and books for the SJB Accelerated Reader program.
More information will follow about when/where the books will be sold. In the meantime, you can donate your new or gently- used books (especially children and young adult books) by bringing them to the main office of the school. For more information, please call Jennifer Popiel at 314-752-5206.

Scouting for Food

St. John the Baptist Scouting for Food – Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl
Scouts working together to help the community

St. John the Baptist scouts has a rich tradition of quiet service by helping others
in need. This year the St. John the Baptist Scouting for Food collection was
a great success as the scouts joined others in our area to deliver 1.8 million
cans to the St. Louis Area Food Bank. November 12 bags were distributed and
November 19 the full bags of food items were collected in the area surrounding
the church and elementary school with the help of over 30 scouts along with
another 20 parents and adults. Deliveries were made to the Christy Firehouse
where the mound of cans grew to be taller than some of the scouts themselves.

The Scouts at St. John the Baptist have a wonderful history of combining forces
on community service projects such as the annual the Boy Scout Scouting for
Food and Girl Scout April Showers collections. This year Boy Scout Troop 20,
Cub Scout Pack 20, and Girl Scout troop families helped the with the annual
Scouting for Food collection in the neighborhood surrounding St. John the Baptist
Elementary School. Likewise, each April the Boy Scout and Cub Scout families
help the Girl Scouts distribute and collect bags full of personal care items for
the annual April Showers collection in the same area. The community benefits
from this “one- two” punch as the combined effort of the scouts allows for more
bags to be distributed in the neighborhood thus increasing the number if items
collected to help those in need of food and personal care items. The scouts also
work together to maintain the gardens on campus: the scouts combine efforts to
obtain and plant flowers in the gardens as well as to gather and spread mulch on
the school campus. As always the scouts do this in a spirit of cheerful service
and still manage to have a lot of fun.
